Paper cut

I just finished this paper cut for a show called "Verbatim" at Nahcotta gallery. Each artist chooses a word and creates a piece that is evocative of that word. I sort of worked backwards to come up with my idea, because I've been interested in lace patterns recently and wanted to create a detailed paper cut where the word was incorporated in a subtle way. The show runs from January 5- January 31.

This was my favorite book growing up and I had the honor of being "Artist of the Day" on the Make a World Film website. Pendleton on Etsy

Pendleton wool fabric has been popular recently- possibly because of their collaboration with Opening Ceremony. I wasn't too familiar with the company before, but I'm amazed at how beautiful the fabrics are. I just came across an etsy seller, Timberline Treasures, that makes nice pillows and bags from the fabric. (I ended up buying the pouch above, though I love the pillows too.) Check them out here.

I also stopped by Art Space in New Haven this weekend with my friend Kathy. My favorite there was artist Jane South, who makes these complex mechanical-looking sculptures out of cut paper and balsa wood. Amazing.

Early Illustration Work

Over the weekend, I visited my parents in Connecticut and stopped by Jones Family Farms. I used to work there in high school and college, and my mom still works there occasionally. For a few summers during college, my main job was painting photo-ops for pumpkin season. I was happy to see that some of mine are still in rotation. I'm pretty sure this was my first paid illustration work. [The banner in the top photo is more recent and painted by Pat Keegan, a.k.a. my mom. If you know anyone who needs a sign or mural... I'm her agent :)]

U.K. Souvenirs

Here is a selection of magazines and zines that I brought back from the U.K. (Though some are actually American.) The two smallest books are from Owl + Lion in Scotland. Amelia's came with a piece of printed fabric that you can make into a bag. Another British magazine I really like, but didn't see was Lula.

London + Edinburgh Trip

I just came back from a few days in the U.K. It was my first time there. While in Edinburgh, I stopped by the Red Door Gallery to drop off a few posters to sell. The Red Door was the first shop anywhere to carry my work- it's a great store and I was happy to get to visit in person. Edinburgh is really beautiful city. I took lots of photos on the trip, and they are all here on my flickr page.

I just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who ordered a Mountain poster from my web shop, and especially for bearing with me while I figured out the ins and outs of Paypal buttons and of shipping larger items like this. I know in many cases it's taken a bit more time than expected (especially for those ordering from outside the U.S.). I think this was due to the fact that the poster was shipped in tubes, so I've decided from now on to ship items flat whenever possible. The Mountain posters are nearly sold out, but I have several new projects in the works... so please stay tuned :)

I went to Kinokuniya at lunch today and finally picked up San Francisco Kitchens. I nearly bought (and may eventually go back for) the book above called Un Deux by the same artist as the book Brooch. Others on my book wish list: Tactile, Fully Booked, and Travel.

Two Books from Cinders

While I was there, I also bought two books. One is a zine of dandelion repeat patterns that you can xerox by an artist named Gary Katchadourian (no website but the book has this email address on it: garykachadourian@hotmail.com.) A pretty genius idea, I think. The second book is from a show I was in a while ago- all drawings done in ballpoint pen. Julia posted about this book here.

This is the book that I mentioned below, by Finnish comics artist Kati Rapia. I bought this from Kati at the MoCCA festival a year or two ago. It's all in Finnish but it came with a sheet with the English translation. It's a nice book with a lot of short and sweet stories in it. Some are clearly drawn from real life, while others have a more dreamlike quality. I'm not sure where you can get this book in the U.S., but it might be worth a try to look for it again at this summer's MoCCA Festival which is coming up pretty soon.

Shop Update

I just added a few new items to my etsy shop...The first is a painting done on a print (maybe an etching?) that I found at an antiques store in Stratford, Connecticut. It was in a frame that I liked, but the frame was falling apart even then. I painted this white pattern on top and actually had it hanging in my own living room for a while. I recently rearranged and decided this might be ready for a new home and possibly a brand new frame. Though it does look kind of nice when it's hung up poster-style too.The other artwork I added is a 3-color gocco print on wood that I made for a show last summer at SQFT. It's kind of like two prints in one because you can hang it upside down and the king face becomes a queen face. I liked how they looked all together at the show...

Finished Ornaments

I finished my ornaments for the swap today and mailed them out. I'm pretty happy with how they turned out, and I'm glad I went with the house design. I may use the owl design for something else in the future. (Thanks again for all your comments :) In the bottom photo is my holiday card for this year- I printed both using the gocco.

Pattern Design : Applications and Variations

I'm very excited to have two patterns I designed in this new book called Pattern Design: Applications and Variations by Lou Andrea Savoir. Each spread shows a pattern design with its application on the facing page which I think is a pretty genius idea for a book. Plus it has many of my favorite designers (and friends) such as Julia Rothman who also blogged about the book over here. The work of mine was done for my "day job" (I guess I can call it that?) at Nickelodeon Magazine.

(Most of my photos contain a dog nose.)
